Planning Ahead: Do I need a passport to cruise?

Here’s our short answer: It depends on your cruise itinerary and country of citizenship.

If you’re sailing on a closed-loop cruise (one that begins and ends in the same U.S. port), U.S. citizens can typically travel with a government-issued birth certificate and driver’s license. Children would just need their birth certificates. However — and this is important — we strongly recommend traveling with a valid passport whenever possible.

Why? If an emergency happens and you need to fly home from a foreign port, a passport is required for re-entry into the United States. We can still get you home, but it is a lot more complicated.

Having one gives you flexibility, peace of mind, and avoids potential travel disruptions.

For cruises that begin or end in a different country (like many European, Alaska, or repositioning sailings), a passport is required.

Not sure what your sailing requires? That’s what we’re here for — We will always confirm documentation requirements before you travel so you can cruise stress-free. 🚢
